To ASUCI Legislative Council and fellow students at the University of California, Irvine:

The Executive Cabinet of ASUCI took great consideration into this resolution in respect of the powers of Legislative Council, and the concerns of various constituents that we are elected to represent. Together, we met twice for discussion over a two week period, and made individual efforts to research and hear the diversity of opinions around this piece of legislation, which has stirred curiosity, debate and learning around global issues.  Moreover, the Executive Cabinet made efforts to hear the various comments expressed during public comment at the three past Legislative Council meetings.

While not everyone had the same opinion, we collectively decided that as a unified cabinet we would issue this accompanying statement based off of a majority vote to express that we are moving forward to authorize R48-15, “Divestment From Companies That Profit From Apartheid”.Moreover, in the spirit of transparency and deep respect for the diverse perspectives within our cabinet, our individual votes are as follows:

Yes:
Neil Bautista, Academic Affairs Vice President
Andrea Gaspar, Executive Vice President
traci ishigo, President

No:
Lena Hu, Administrative Affairs Vice President
Jessica Phan, Student Services Vice President

For each Executive Cabinet member, this decision had intimate connections to various factors ranging from our individual research, conversations, perspective regarding specific language, to our own personal heritage, identities and history.

We encourage that if any student has questions regarding our individual votes within the Executive Cabinet decision, please email the respective Executive Officer for a personal response.

In Solidarity,

traci ishigo, President
Andrea Gaspar, Executive Vice President
Lena Hu, Administrative Affairs Vice President
Neil Bautista, Academic Affairs Vice President
Jessica Phan, Student Services Vice President
