According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five adults experiences a mental health condition every year. The stigma attached to mental illness can make an individual feel ashamed for their condition and as a result, do not seek help. As the ASUCI Mental Health Commission, one of our goals is to end the mental health stigma here at UC Irvine. In this contest, we ask that Undergraduate UCI students submit a 500-1000 word paper sharing a personal experience or creating a fictional story about the stigma attached to mental illness.

Each story, whether it is from personal experience or fictional should contain the following:
  • One mental health related topic.
  • The possible stigmas attached to mental health.
  • Suggestion of mental health resources.
We will be selecting three (3) winners who will be recognize at our End of the Quarter event on February 28th. Attendants at our event will have the opportunity to read the winning stories.
  1. First place winner will receive a $75 gift certificate to the UCI bookstore.
  2. Second place winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the UCI bookstore.
  3. Third place winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to the UCI bookstore.

Your submission needs to be between 500-1000 words. If your story is under or exceeds the word count, then your submission will be disqualified. Please submit your story submission to mentalhealth@asuci.uci.edu. In the email, please indicate what year you are at UCI and your contact information (phone number and email).

The deadline for the Storytelling Contest will be on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 11:59PM.

We look forward to reading your story!

Good luck,
ASUCI Mental Health Commission
