Student Support and Advocacy

Noe Cortez

Student Support and Advocacy Commissioner

Hi everyone :D!

My name is Noe Cortez (he/him/his) and I am a fourth-year double majoring in Business Economics & Psychology. I was born and raised in SoCal, more specifically West Covina, CA (626 area) and I am super excited to be serving as your Student Support & Advocacy Commissioner for the 2022-2023 Academic year. Last year I had the opportunity to serve as an intern under this commission and I really found my passion in being able to help people, and support them in any way.

To tell you a little about myself I love spending quality time with my friends and family, skating, trying new delicious foods, watching movies, and exploring new places. I would love to also travel more in the future and get to learn more about the different cultures and countries the world has to offer.

You will always see me trying to learn new things and skills. I do this by having meaningful conversations, learning from experiences, and hearing people’s stories. I can’t wait to hear from the student body and represent them to the best of my ability. I will ensure that the student body is well advocated for, by ensuring that all student’s voices are heard and all student’s needs are addressed! Please feel free to contact me for any reason and help me build our community here at UCI.

Office Hours: TBD

Commission Description:

Every student has the right to benefit from all the available resources that our diverse campus has to offer. The mission of Student Support & Advocacy is to work with campus departments, student organizations, and other coalitions in ASUCI to improve the structural support for all students. We will advocate for students in financial difficulties, personal crises, student rights, and more through educational events, initiatives, and social media campaigns that will ultimately give students the necessary tools to succeed. This commission will also work to educate students on their rights, and the rights of underrepresented communities within the undergraduate population with the aim of focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Additionally, our goal is to connect students with ASUCI, departments, and organizations within the UCI community and beyond, to provide the opportunity for students to develop their own unique support system during their time at UCI.

Commission Goals:

1. Create Events and Initiatives to Support Underrepresented Groups at UCI through Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts.
2. Increase Awareness and Action on Student Rights (Women’s rights, LGBTQ+ rights, Legal rights, Disability rights, Workers’ rights, and more)
3. Listen to Student Voices by obtaining Feedback Regularly and See How Best to Support Them (Quarterly Updates)
4. Provide and Create Resources for Students in Financial, Personal or Academic Crisis (in relation to ongoing world issues)
5. Host, Create and Collaborate on Events that will Teach Important Life Skills to Students (post-grad options, financial transparency, investments)
