***[2024-2025 Council on Diversity and Equity] Latine Identity Commission Intern Application

Due Friday, September 20th, 2024 by 11:59 pm

Latine Identity Commission Description: The Latiné Identity Commission is part of the Council on Diversity and Equity (CODE), under the Office of the Internal Vice President in ASUCI. Our Commission seeks to represent and serve the unique needs and interests of the Latiné student community, both as a whole and as a collection of intersectional groups, here at UCI. The goal of our work is to right historical and contemporary injustices experienced by the Latiné community, by creating physically and intellectually inclusive spaces for the equitable and just treatment of diverse peoples, ultimately ensuring a sense of community and belonging particularly in education. We plan to achieve our goal by developing events/programs that not only cater to, but accurately represent Latiné students, culture, and community. We have a few ambitions set for the 2024-25 academic year; our ambitions include the following:

- Creating fun events that showcase the array of different countries and cultures that fall under the Latiné group identity; this would involve doing research on, finding celebratory events (i.e. traditions, holidays, ceremonies, etc.) for, and pitching different means of representing Latin American countries/cultures for the enjoyment of Latiné and non-Latiné students alike

- Building educational and culturally comprehensive programs that cater to and represent Latiné students based on the many different ways they can exist; you may be asked to learn about and consider events on behalf of a certain intersectional group within the Latiné community to ensure our thorough compassionate consideration of all types of Latiné students (intersectional groups include, but are not limited to, disabled, LGBTQ+, international, immigrant, first gen, non-English- speaking, and mixed-race/mixed-ethnic student communities)

- Planning and participating in activities that gauge the wants, interest, and needs of Latiné students; this can include hosting informational and survey booths to collect feedback from Latiné students on their knowledge of the Latiné Identity Commission, their involvement in our events, their satisfaction with our performance, and their suggestions for future events/ programs

- Fostering and maintaining efficient communication, coordination, and collaboration with Latiné student-led organizations, the RISE Suite Centers, other on-campus Centers, and other Commissions; on your part, this would likely involve talking/relaying information to and assisting/guiding members of the above-listed organizations, when needed, to ensure the smooth running of booths, events, and programs

- Bringing the Latiné student community together, more often and in a more comprehensive way, overall; your service to this ambition would involve helping us brainstorm, create action plans for, keep track of, and execute ideas for events/programs

In order to achieve what we as a Commission have set out to do with our ambitions, we aim to create the most efficient and communicative team possible. I do not believe this internship will require an extensive amount of commitment time- or energy-wise; however, we are still looking for people who will be committed to the betterment of the Latiné student community. We are looking for people who are passionate, motivated, goal-oriented, and full of bright ideas.

General Intern Expectations:

-Attend weekly team meetings and ALL-ASUCI events/meetings.

-Collaborate with other interns to successfully plan and host commission initiatives.

-Build a community for people to join and feel comfortable in.
