FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. What is ASUCI?
ASUCI is the officially recognized undergraduate student government here at UCI – you might recognize us from from Welcome Week, ZotTalks, or Summerlands! As your student government, we’re responsible for many different things, including regularly providing resources and programming through events and conferences, managing commercial activities like the ASUCI discount tickets and the quarterly Vendor Fair, appointing students to important university committees, and advocating for students at the university, local, state, and national level. Our government also ensures that the basic rights of students, as established in our Constitution, are recognized, protected, and advocated for. What’s more, we’re entirely student-led – by the students, for the students! Everything we do to make UCI a better campus for Anteaters is made possible by the incredible student leaders who join us every year!
2. How is ASUCI structured?
Much like the federal government, ASUCI is a tripartite system of government that consists of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches. Additionally, two independent branches are also incorporated into ASUCI to fulfill administrative functions – the Office of the Student Advocate General and the Elections Commission.
Executive Branch:
The Executive Branch consists of the President and the four (4) Vice Presidents (External, Internal, Academic Affairs, and Student Services) who are elected at large by the undergraduate student body. The Executive Branch also retains a Chief Media & Technology Officer to manage the Association’s official medias. 3. How is ASUCI funded?
ASUCI is funded by the Associated Students Fee – a student fee assessed to all undergraduate students at UCI. Per the Registrar, these funds are intended to “provide social activities, lectures, forums, concerts, and other activities at either a reduced charge, or no charge, to UCI [undergraduate] students.” For the 2024-2025 academic year, the AS Fee is set at $51.32 per quarter ($153.96 for the year).
Near the end of each academic year, the Joint Committee on the Budget is convened to prepare the ASUCI Budget for the upcoming academic year. The final budget must then be approved by the Senate per the ASUCI Constitution. Our funding goes towards a variety of different line items, including stipends, operational expenses, conference expenses, programs like the AntLeader Mentorship Program and Visions Leadership, events like Screen on the Green and Summerlands, and more! To maintain transparency, the annual budget is posted on the ASUCI Budget page. Executive Officers, Cabinet Officers, and Branch Heads are also expected to provide a budget report to the Senate during Weeks 3 and 6 of a given academic Quarter to publicly explain their expenditures.
